Account scoring ranks accounts by purchase likelihood. Reps focus on highest-scoring accounts first.

Without scoring, reps call the accounts they know or the ones that called them first. With scoring, they call the accounts most likely to close.

The Account Scoring Framework
Account score = Fit Score + Engagement Score
Fit Score answers: Is this account a good match for us? (Static attributes)
Engagement Score answers: Are they showing buying signals right now? (Dynamic behavior)
Both matter. A perfect ICP match that's not buying isn't worth outreach. A non-ICP account showing high engagement is worth exploring.
Building Your Fit Score
Fit score is based on company attributes that predict they'll be a good customer.
Start with attributes that describe your best existing customers:
For a sales engagement platform, fit might include: - Company size: 50-500 employees (not startups, not enterprise) - Revenue: Mid-market range (can afford software) - Industry: SaaS, Tech Services, Professional Services (not Manufacturing, Retail) - Use case: Has a sales team of 5+ reps - Location: US-based (language, support timezone) - Technology stack: Uses Salesforce or HubSpot (integration requirement)

Engagement score is based on buying signals right now.

Combined Account Score
Account Score = (Fit Score * 0.4) + (Engagement Score * 0.6)
Weighting (adjust based on your sales process): - Fit: 40% (they have to be a good match) - Engagement: 60% (but behavior matters more than attributes)
Account ABC: (100 * 0.4) + (37 * 0.6) = 40 + 22 = 62/100 (Good account, but not yet actively buying)
Account XYZ: (0 * 0.4) + (41 * 0.6) = 0 + 24.5 = 24/100 (Wrong fit, but some behavior)

Once you have scores, create tiers:
Tier 1: Score 80+ - Fit: High. Engagement: High. - Action: Immediate outreach. Sales rep calls within 48 hours. - Cadence: 2-3 touches/week (call + email + LinkedIn).
Tier 2: Score 60-79 - Fit: High. Engagement: Medium. - Action: Outreach within 5 business days. - Cadence: 1-2 touches/week.
Tier 3: Score 40-59 - Fit: Medium or High with Low engagement. Low fit but some engagement. - Action: Nurture sequence (marketing, not sales). - Cadence: 1 touch/week or less.
Tier 4: Score Below 40 - Fit: Low. Engagement: Low. - Action: Watch list. Monitor for behavior changes. - Cadence: Monthly check. Trigger outreach if engagement increases.
Dynamic Scoring (Update Weekly)
Fit score is static. An account with 100 employees will probably stay a good fit.
Engagement score is dynamic. An account with zero engagement last week might have five touches this week. Their score should change.
Update engagement scores weekly.
Set up a process: - Monday morning: Pull all accounts with website visits, email opens, content downloads from the past 7 days. - Recalculate engagement score. - Flag accounts that moved from Tier 3 or 4 into Tier 2 or 1 (opportunity!). - Flag accounts that dropped from Tier 1 or 2 into Tier 3 or 4 (invest more or deprioritize?).
This ensures your reps are always calling the hottest accounts.
Measurement: Does Scoring Actually Work?
Track this after 90 days:

If Tier 1 converts significantly better than Tier 4, your scoring is working. Adjust weights if needed.
If Tier 1 and Tier 4 convert equally, your model is wrong. Rebuild.
Common Scoring Mistakes
1. Too many attributes. Start with 5-6. Every attribute is a question you have to ask or data you have to look up. Keep it simple.
2. Wrong weighting. If engagement doesn't drive your deals, don't weight it 60%. Test and adjust based on data.
3. Not updating engagement. A static engagement score is useless. Update weekly.
4. Ignoring negative signals. Visiting your competitor's site is a signal too. Maybe it's a good signal (they're comparing you). Maybe it's bad (they're choosing them). Tag it.
5. Not using the score. You built a beautiful model. Your reps still call whoever. Score only works if reps follow it.
